  • HGC PPFF DCNR- PLANTING TREES!

Three years ago I had a vision and yesterday the vision came true! Never in a million years did I think that what I believe in, what I am passionate about, the changes I want, was seen as I surrounded myself with those with the same goals and passion. Yesterday wasn't JUST about planting trees but it was about helping my Mother Earth with people who also want to take care of her. It was about representing my brand and what it stands for. If you were wondering, YES! I hugged a tree!!! Pennsylvania Parks and Forest Foundation reached out to Hippie Girl Collection for the assistance of planting the trees that the Giant Healthy Planet Grant funded. We were in the beautiful Sam Lewis State Park with a couple of the DCNR crew. Sam Lewis State Park is an 85 acre State Park and is the highest peak in York County raised above ground at a whopping 885 foot ridge! Best place for kite flying ;) Sam Lewis overlooks the Susquehanna River and has a wonderful hiking path. A hiking path that I had the pleasure of weeding. Did you know that the forest needs weeding too?? Just like your flower bed or garden. Pennsylvania has a vast amount of invasive species of trees and plants. Our DCNR educator of the group, Kelly, explained what to weed and why. I'm always asking 'WHY?'. Invasive species of vegetation effects the way birds eat, the bacteria that spreads from tree to tree, to the yucky insects that eat our Native greenery. Basically, invasive plants out compete for resources like food and water and they reproduce rapidly. Disease carriers like ticks love Barberry, an invasive that I was happy to have cut and pulled. Why so many invasives??? Because they're pretty and businesses profit from pretty things. Pretty isn't always better, folks! I understand that EVERY THING is connected. There really is a 'butterfly effect' in everything. From sharing a smile with someone to pulling out tick invested weeds, so that our Natives grow and bloom healthy. To maybe leading by example so that someone watching can understand what we are tying to do for future generations. As I conclude my thoughts from this experience: 1. We humans are better than what we think we are. We can do better all the time with everything we do. Everyday. We have the conscious to do so. 2. There are PLENTY of like-minded, goal-minded individuals you can surround yourself with. Find them and stick with them. 3. It is plain as day, to me and my opinion, that climate shifting, disease spreading exponentially and crime rates rising are real as the nose on my face. And with the power of trees and education we can HELP. If we can't change things we can make it better. And better is always better. :) If you would like to contribute to Pennsylvania Parks and Forest Foundation, click here: If you would like to donate to HGC to help us contribute to our conservation wish list, click here:

  • Thoughts of Reflection with Santa Claus

Being able to do something with the community is always a blessing on my heart. Especially when the babies and puppies are involved! Santa Claus was gracious enough to grace his presencs upon our little ones at our brick and mortar location. His HO-HO-HO was contagious and joyful, just as his soul is. Our guests' bellies were full of cocoa and sweet treats! Gifts were bought that were thoughtful and unique to the individual. Products that were handmade with detail and love. It was a day full of giving and togetherness that I will never forget. Our 1st Cocoa with Santa was a hit! And I'm already planning for the next Christmas! I'm writing this entry on January 1, 2022 in a state of reflection. The business has busted at the seams in a short amount of time. The HGC team is growing and more trees are going to have a chance of life. Who said you can't start a business during a pandemic!? 2021 had its ups and downs. It had blood sweat and way too many tears. It had happy days and days that wouldn't end. It had sleepless nights and days that I didn't want to end. 2021 came with surprises, humps and bumps, and organic relationships that formed for the greater good. The year had teachings while being taught a few lessons from the universe to myself. There were losses, too many losses, and many gains. Our lives have changed. Not good nor bad but just different. Isn't that what we are supposed to do? Are we not supposed to change as we go? Learn and grow as we age? I want to thank all the people who have believed in me during the journey. All the souls that have created goods and products for the store. For my family and close friends that help at the drop of a dime. I am thankful for all those who have had a hand in making my dream come true. I am free and liberated more than I have ever felt in my life. The Lord knows what he is doing. God is good always. Always, God is good. Happy New Year! May you be blessed and prosperous in 2022! Please enjoy the slideshow from Cocoa with Santa. Photos by my sweetest niece, Carrie.

  • Boards & Bees Workshop with Seniors

*** Due to the privacy of our Seniors and their families, we have edited our photos. Seniors with Alzheimer's or dementia often enjoy and benefit from creative activities like art that give the opportunity for non-verbal expression. Creative activities also help reduce agitation and boost mood as well as give a sense of accomplishment and purpose. Painting and drawing classes allow those with dementia to express themselves in meaningful ways. Some dementia patients are able to express themselves and evoke memories through art, such as an image of a horse that reminded artist Chiyoko Lee of her childhood pony. Being able to give these folks an opportunity to enjoy themselves outside of their facility is a humbling experience. Seeing the inquisitiveness on their faces as our educational speaker presented us with bee facts, was a sight to be seen. Important bee facts: Almost 90% of wild plants and 75% of leading global crops depend on animal pollination.1 One out of every three mouthfuls of our food depends on pollinators. Crops that depend on pollination are five times more valuable than those that do not. Honeybees have a dance move called the ‘waggle dance’. It’s not actually a dance move at all, rather a clever way of communicating between themselves to tell their nestmates where to go to find the best source of food. It took the researchers at Sussex University two years to decode the waggle dance. In their 4-6 week lifespan, a worker bee will fly the equivalent distance of 3 times the circumference of the Earth. In order to make a pound of honey, a hive of bees must fly 55,000 miles!! Honey is the only foodstuff that contains all of the necessary nutrients to sustain life!!!! *Snack spread provided by Cherry Lane Farm LLC and made from their honey. We know there are other things people can do to help fight Alzheimer’s, and one of these is brain exercise. It has been shown in many, many studies that older adults who have had more brain exercise in their lives are better protected against Alzheimer’s disease. So! Not only was I able to bring conservation and crafts together, we were able to help in a very important part of someone's life. We provided a bit of therapy for these ladies. We are all connected. Everything on this gorgeous plant of ours. We have to try as hard as we can to protect it and everything ON it! If you or you know a small group that would like to par-take in an event similar to this, please reach out and we will help every step of the way to coordinate with your organization. • Convo & Crafts- Summer Edition

Creating Conservation through Crafting "Creativity takes courage." -Henri Matisse This is a group of women with plenty of courage to go around! They inspire, create and encourage. It is amazing how a collective of humans can come together, laugh, eat, drink and be merry! Diversity, in my opinion, is what makes this world go round and have all of its glory! From the food on our table, to the wine in our bellies, it all has eclectic origins. From Italy to Japan to the corners of Africa. We can all find a commonality. It seems, that crafting is our common relation here at Hippie Girl Collection. When I began this adventure, my narrow thought was to engrave and plant trees. Today, it has allowed me to meet more and more like minded "hippies" and share the thing we are passionate about. It has been an outreach to the public to discuss conservation and more! It has been a networking hang out! The support I have gotten has been most humbling. I know that I am still an infant in this journey but a journey like this is meant to be a slow brew. Just like our plant; it took millions of years to be the perfect plant that it is. Just like a tree that came from a seed, grows its roots to be able to be strong enough to hold up its trunk, to the branches that expand to become the full potential tree. I am a tree. • Workshops and Wonder

This past year brought a lot of uncertainty for our little company. However, it did allow for a TON of brainstorming! One of the brilliant ideas that developed from the steam coming out of our ears, was to reach out more to the community and search deep about our duty of conservation. I was able to connect with the very passionate bat enthusiast, Lynnette, who came to our shop and presented her knowledge of bats and the incredible use for them in our eco-system. Did you know that there is a very yucky disease that is taking over the bat community and they are becoming endangered. Do you realize that without bats, so much could go wrong! The spread of disease from mosquitos to human could be extremely catastrophic. Worse than any pandemic that we have seen yet! On a lighter note; After the adorable slide show of the world's bats, we moved indoors to the Hippie Shop to begin our bat house building! We had a blast putting our bat houses together and engraving them with the laser! We talked and did some networking about future events and how each of us can contribute to saving the planet. Our guests picked a picture of their liking and we engraved that image onto the houses! I feel this made the houses more welcoming for the bats ;-) We will be holding more workshops alike for the months to come! If you would be interested in attending such an event, please subscribe to our website. If you would like to know more about the bat conservation or would like to contribute, please visit www.batcon.org.

  • Recycled/ Upcycled/ Pallets to Coasters

A lot of times I scope out #Marketplace on #Facebook for people trying to unload scraps. Sometimes, donations of lumber are received to us from home building projects. On a few occasions we have been commissioned to turn this lumber into a memory for an anniversary gift. We play a special part in lives. A part I didn't even realize we were doing. This little #coaster business has gone from, "buy a coaster, plant a #tree" to making heirlooms and memories for a life time! I am humbled and appreciative that I can make things for folks that will be with them for a lifetime!

  • You're Welcome to Visit, Aunt Flo.

I’m gonna get a bit personal but maybe I can help others. (I am not trying to sell anything! lol. Just me being me 😊) I have been suffering with super over reactive menstrual cycle for many years. What I mean is, I have labor-like back pains, boating so much that you could use me as a bowling ball and ask my family how mean I am once a month! I hate it! I told Doctors about it and they just pretty much said, take a prescription and chalk it up to being older. You’re going through “the change.”- don don dooon.. I just don’t want to be a girl anymore! Well, let me tell you…. Today was an awful, awful day… I went to the chiropractor to fix other back issues and usually his “magic” works this time of the month as well. But I just couldn’t knock this bloating and cramping. Omg! I didn’t even tell you about the CRAMPING- I mean, holy hell, could you just take the vice off my ovaries, please!!! So, I’m dying and I’m not one for hard drugs. I take an Aleve at most for any pain. After starting Hippie Girl Collection.com I have really been diving into wellness and health. So I used my BFF, Google, to ask how to help these horrific but necessary craps of being a woman/chick/girl/whatever you call yourself that has a uterus, ovaries and over the age of 35. Here’s what I found and tested: GINGER!!! Use ginger for bloating and cramping. Real ginger. Just take a little knot off the root and blend it into any smoothie or food. I’m currently drinking a carrot, orange, ginger, cinnamon, banana smoothie. Gross right?! Not really. Ginger is a cancer fighter and brain strengthening functionor. Ha! Probably why I’m on this writing kick right now! wahoo!! And, drum roll please………………………..It lessons MENSTRUAL PAINS!!!! Gals, I swear I swear. The results were almost instant!! I really thought I was gonna keel over before I made this smoothie. Oranges- Just yum… oranges are also a cancer preventative. Great source of energy, cause you know you be draggin. Of course I have to tell you, it promotes hair growth!!! Cinnamon- A natural relief of inflammation (bowling ball bloating). Bananas- Improves MOODS!!! Smoothing the skin and treating those lil red specimens that pop up on your chin and nose! (pimples). Also gives you energy… yup, still typing! Carrots- Whelp, would you look at that, carrots have also been linked to reducing cancer. It’s like I just found the cure-all for cancer in one smoothie! Jk! Maybe 😉 Also good for brain function. And good for the skin! I’m telling you guys, I am genius! Haha. So, here’s my cure cancer (I’m not a doctor and don’t claim to be. I am being silly. Just to clarify for any haters.) and menstrual pains all-in-one smoothie recipe: 1 banana 6 organic baby carrots 1 knuckle of ginger 1 orange ¼ teaspoon cinnamon. Blend with about ½ cup of filtered water and about 4-6 cubes of ice. Blend until smooth. ENJOY! Xo, A.
